New Year Celebrations
I write this final blog of 2016 within a busy Newlyns Farm Shop, wishing some customers Happy Christmas and the next ones a Happy New Year. We are in that middle zone where we are not sure what to wish our friends and relatives. Despite this awkwardness, a bottle of good wine is a certain way to win favour with your New Year hosts and guests. Yesterday evening, I polished off a bottle of Château de Chemilly Petit Chablis 2015 (£14.95) and was impressed by how well it went with cold cuts of ham, turkey and a hot fluffy baked potato with butter. White wine with meat? Yes it really does work! Every customer to the shop today is under threat of being upsold to a bottle of Yarra Yering Agincourt 2012, Victoria (£35), the closest Australia gets to a fine Bordeaux but with just a little extra sunshine and fruit on the palate. I love it and it loves a good steak or a simple roast pheasant. Hayley (Overton manager) would be upset if I did not mention her favourite Marchesi di Gresy Monferrato 2008, Piedmont (£16.95) an out of place Merlot from Northwest Italy, but every bit as good as a £35 Pomerol from Bordeaux. Back to white wine, do please try (and buy) the simply named ‘Plaisir’ (£11.95) from Châteauneuf producer Roger Sabon, a rich complex and fascinating blend of five southern Rhône grapes including Grenache Blanc and Viognier. Or just buy 6 for £60 which is an offer we can also apply to our truly delicious Vignarosa Prosecco (normal price £11.75) which, with its crisp palate of English apples, is better than anything else out there. For something sweet and special both our shops have a cluster of 1er Cru Sauternes half bottles from the brilliant 2005 vintage, so please pay us a visit. And if your New Year bubbles need an upgrade then the solution is an easy one. Take some bottles of the deliciously English Hattingley Valley Classic Cuvée 2013 (£29.95 – or buy 6 bottles and we shall give you a free bottle of our popular British cassis, worth £20) and raise your glasses to a happy and prosperous 2017.
