The Unique Character of Douro Valley's Terroir

The 2021 Niepoort Vertente Tinto is a sophisticated blend that embodies the heart of the Douro Valley. Sourced from over 35-year-old vines at Quinta de Nápoles and the ancient terraces of the Pinhão River slopes, this red captures the best of both worlds. The mature vines lend depth and complexity, while younger plantings bring a burst of freshness. With its mix of Touriga Franca, Tinta Amarela, and Rufete, Vertente Tinto is the epitome of finesse, combining rich flavours with a linear elegance that defines Niepoort’s signature style.

The 2021 growing season surprised everyone with larger yields, with Quinta de Nápoles seeing a 50% boost compared to the previous year. The harvest kicked off on 11th August, delivering grapes with ideal ripeness, firm skins, and fantastic acidity. A meticulous double sorting process in the vineyards and cellars ensured only the best bunches made it into the blend. The wine was fermented in conical stainless steel tanks and aged for 22 months in French oak barriques, allowing it to develop its character while maintaining freshness and balance.

Tasting Note: Pouring a vibrant ruby hue, the Vertente Tinto 2021 opens with aromas of fresh red berries, subtle floral hints, and a whisper of spice. On the palate, it showcases layers of graphite, mint, and a touch of tobacco box, complemented by a hint of leather. The balanced acidity adds a lively freshness, leading to a refined, lingering finish that speaks of the Douro’s schist soils and timeless winemaking traditions.
