2013 Julicher Estate Pinot Noir
The story of Julicher Estate Pinot Noir is one of grit, determination, and a bit of serendipity. It all began with Wim Julicher, a Dutch bricklayer who, armed with nothing but hard work and a dream, set out to make his mark on New Zealand’s wine industry. Originally, Wim planned to produce olive oil, but the cold climate at his Te Muna vineyard had other ideas. What proved disastrous for olive trees turned out to be a blessing for Pinot Noir.
With no formal viticulture training, Wim watched and learned from his neighbours, like the renowned Larry McKenna of Escarpment. Before long, he realised the unique potential of his land, and when top producers like Ata Rangi eagerly bought his first Pinot Noir crop, Wim knew he was onto something special. After Ata Rangi declined to set aside any fruit for him in the second vintage, Wim decided to keep it all, and thus Julicher Estate Pinot Noir was born.
Today, Julicher Estate is known for producing some of the finest Pinot Noir in the world, a testament to Wim’s vision, tenacity, and a little bit of good fortune.
