2022 Moorooduc Pinot Gris on the Skins
Battered and broken, the end of 2021 tested the mettle of every grapevine; October and November, in particular, were fierce. Intense rain, gusty winds, and frigid temperatures wrought havoc on pollination, leafs, and canopies alike, necessitating intensive efforts in the vineyard.
Eventually, the weather gods felt pity, blessing the crops with clement conditions throughout the summer. Alas, the harvest yielded greatly reduced harvests in many regions, and with the smaller berries came riper, juicier skins - a boon to winemakers crafting a balanced, graceful wine.
Tasting Note: On the nose, hints of pink rose, white pepper, sour cherries and rhubarb mingle with a curious, "tomato" umami. The hue of this luscious Pinot Gris is neither deep salmon nor pale garnet, but something in between: a shimmering peach-coral, akin to an Aperol Spritz.
