2022 Rusden Driftsand GSM
Wine like so many others things is driven by fashion. In the 1970s all the big producers pulled out old Grenache vines because they weren`t seen as a quality option and often planted Cabernet instead. A few decades later it is understood that old Grenache plants can produce wonderfully complex and dense wines so some old vine material has been grafted back.
At Rusden, they have since grafted the 25 year old vines back to their original Grenache and Shiraz varieties to pay tribute to the German pioneers who originally planted them.
Traditionally used for fortified wines, they use Grenache in this classic blend with Shiraz.
Tasting Note: Both red & dark fruits on the nose, red licorice, hints of musk stick lollies, white pepper. Spice laden palate with raspberry, dark cherries and again hints of musk. With chewy tannins to finish, this wine definitely take inspiration from the Southern Rhone Valley in France.
Origin: Barossa, Australia
Blend: Grenache, Shiraz, Mataro
