2009 Chateau Musar Red

£130.00

Seven years in the making, followed by additional time in the bottle, the 2009 Chateau Musar Red is a distinguished expression of the estate’s time-honoured winemaking. This classic red is a blend that artfully combines tradition with a distinctive sense of place.

Sourced from vineyards near the Bekaa Valley villages of Aana and Kefraya, the wine is produced from mature bushvines planted from the 1930s onward. With vines averaging 40 years of age and yields ranging between 15 to 35 hl per hectare, each grape contributes to the wine’s concentrated, full-flavoured character.

The winemaking process features lengthy fermentations in cement vats at temperatures below 30°C, followed by 6 months of maturation in French oak barrels from the Nevers forest. The varietal components - Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan, and Cinsault - are meticulously blended three years after the harvest, returned to cement tanks, and finally bottled after an additional 12 months. A further four years of bottle maturation in deep stone cellars brings out the wine’s exceptional complexity.

This wine is unfined and unfiltered, reflecting Chateau Musar’s commitment to natural winemaking. Although it may develop deposits, decanting an hour before serving reveals a wine of deep scarlet intensity, rich in both fruit and spice. Its evolution over time offers a captivating experience, making it a prized addition to any collection.

Pairing Suggestions: Excellently paired with roasts, grilled lamb, casseroles, game dishes, or mature cheeses.

Tasting Note: Deep scarlet with blackberries, Assam tea, dark chocolate, mulled berries, and rich black and red fruits accented by warm cinnamon spice and a hint of mint.

Chateau Musar

Chateau Musar is a revered producer in Lebanon that honours ancient winemaking traditions with a modern, minimal intervention approach.

The Hochar family manages 220 hectares of Musar vineyards, nestled in the sun-drenched Bekaa Valley, with a deep respect for nature, allowing the land to speak for itself.

Having achieved organic certification for its own vineyards in 2006, Chateau Musar continues a legacy that dates back to 1930 when Gaston Hochar planted his first vines after returning from Bordeaux. Today, the estate thrives amid 300 days of sunshine, fresh mountain breezes, and a storied history that blends Phoenician heritage with contemporary winemaking finesse.

With grapes hand-harvested by local Bedouins and ambient yeasts guiding fermentation, the wines are crafted without fining or filtration. This authentic approach, combined with centuries-old traditions and a spirit of innovation, ensures that every bottle reflects the unique character of the Bekaa Valley.
