2014 Chateau Palmer Margaux
Chateau Palmer is a leading wine estate in Margaux. Officially ranked as a Third Growth at the 1855 Classification of Bordeaux wine, the wines of Chateau Palmer have the pedigree to reach ethereal heights amongst their peers.
The estate has a rich history that dates well into the 17th century, though it was not until 1814 that Englishman Charles Palmer took ownership and gave it his name. In 1938, the estate was bought by four Bordeaux négociant families, two of whom – Maison Sichel and Mähler-Besse – still own the property today. Since 2004, the estate has been guided by Thomas Duroux, who had previously made wine at the iconic Ornellaia in Tuscany.
Fermentation occurs in conical, stainless-steel vats in varying sizes, allowing each variety and parcel to be fermented separately for subsequent selection and blending. The grand vin is aged for 20-22 months in barrels, of which less than 50% is new. Thanks to the health and consistency of the estate’s biodynamically produced fruit, Palmer has been able, over the past few years, to safely reduce the quantity of sulphites added throughout the process, aiming to produce wines with more freshness and purity of flavour. In fact, since 2013 the property has fully transitioned into biodynamic farming practices.
Pairing Suggestions: Perfect with roast venison, beef Wellington, duck confit, or aged cheeses like Comté and Epoisses. A sublime match for rich, earthy dishes.
Tasting Note: "The 2014 Chateau Palmer is dense and lush, with great layers of black fruit and acidity. The first fully biodynamic vintage from this estate has certainly yielded impressive ripe fruit, with structured tannins and dark berry flavours that linger long. It has enormous potential." Wine Enthusiast 97/100.
