2020 Antinori Tignanello

£160.00

The Tenuta Tignanello estate is in the heart of Chianti Classico, in the gently rolling hillsides between the Greve and Pesa river valleys.

Tignanello was the first Sangiovese to be aged in barriques, the first contemporary red wine blended with untraditional varieties (specifically Cabernet) and one of the first red wines in the Chianti Classico region that didn’t use white grapes. Tignanello is a milestone. It’s produced with a selection of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc.

The 2020 growing season began with mild and dry winter weather, followed by a brief cold spell in late March. Spring brought moderate rainfall and cool temperatures, while the summer months were hot with occasional showers that provided ideal conditions for the grapes to flourish. Harvesting began in early September and lasted for three intense weeks until mid-October, starting with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc and ending with Cabernet Sauvignon. The month of September saw scattered light precipitation and allowed for optimal maturity.

Aging took place in French and Hungarian oak barrels, partly new and partly second use, for 15 months, after an initial period of aging the components separately.

Made primarily with Sangiovese and a small percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, underwent an additional 12-month period of aging in the bottle before being released.

Tasting Note: A rich ruby hue, boasting a stunning array of aromas. Ripe red fruit of cherries, strawberries, and blackberries, is layered with delicate floral undertones of violets, mallow blossoms, and roses. Hints of roasted coffee and cocoa powder add to the intricate bouquet. Smooth and vibrant, the wine envelops the palate in a luxurious and multi-dimensional experience. The finale is a harmonious blend of peppery spices and liquorice, bright and juicy fruit, mingling with refreshing hints of aromatic herbs for a long-lasting, invigorating finish.

Marchesi Antinori

Antinori has become Tuscany’s - arguably Italy’s - pre-eminent wine producer, establishing an important presence in Piedmont, Umbria, Puglia and Lombardy.

The Antinori family has been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries and exporting it for four – that’s 26 generations of uninterrupted family ownership, making them the 10th oldest company in the world still in the hands of the same family. They moved to Florence in the early 13th century, and remain central figures in the fabric of the city.

Marchese Piero Antinori sums up the company’s outlook thus: “Ancient roots play an important role in our philosophy, but they have never held back our spirit of innovation.”
