2019 Chateau Rouget Pomerol

£60.00

Château Rouget, one of Pomerol’s hidden gems, has a rich history that spans centuries.

The 2019 is a vintage that promises to captivate from the very first sip. Vintages ending in '9' have a certain magic, and this is no exception. It wasn’t an easy year, with challenging weather keeping the winemaking team on their toes. Yet, this only reinforced the estate’s “haute couture” approach to every decision, ensuring perfection at every step.

The grapes, hand-harvested with precision, undergo multiple rounds of sorting to ensure only the best fruit makes it to the cellar. Fermentation is split between oak vats (60%) and barrels (40%), followed by ageing in 30% new oak, resulting in a wine that is both bold and refined. The smooth fermentations immediately revealed an incredible purity of fruit and elegant tannins, signalling a truly exceptional vintage for Château Rouget.

Tasting Note: With a deep ruby hue, this wine is as generous as it is inviting. The bouquet opens with luscious black fruits, evolving into soft, sweet spices. On the palate, the wine reveals a surprising freshness, silky tannins, and a vibrant mid-palate crunch. With every sip, the 2019 Château Rouget continues to unveil new layers, making it a lively and complex wine you’ll want to revisit time and again.

Chateau Rouget

Château Rouget, one of Pomerol’s hidden gems, has a rich history that spans centuries. By the late 19th century, it was already recognised as one of the top five estates in the Pomerol appellation. This prestigious ranking didn’t happen by chance but through the dedication of generations of owners, each committed to producing wines of exceptional quality. Fast forward to 1992, when the Labruyère family, renowned vintners from the Beaujolais region, fell in love with the estate. They saw its untapped potential and set out to restore Château Rouget to its former glory.

Today, Château Rouget is a name to be reckoned with on the Right Bank, consistently impressing critics and wine lovers alike with its steadily improving vintages. Under the leadership of Edouard Labruyère and the skilled estate manager, Antoine Ribeiro, the team continues to work with passion and precision, maintaining the estate’s reputation for excellence.

Nestled on the renowned Pomerol plateau, Château Rouget’s vineyards benefit from the perfect terroir for Merlot, which thrives in the region’s unique clay and gravel soils. With neighbours like Petrus and Le Pin, Château Rouget is in exceptional company, and its 42 acres of vines produce wines that beautifully express the richness and complexity of this extraordinary terroir.

Château Rouget sits on gravelly soils mixed with clay, giving its wines the distinct elegance and finesse Pomerol is known for. The vineyard is planted with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, from vines averaging 40 years old. Sustainably farmed, the vineyard benefits from practices like cover cropping and ploughing to enhance soil health.
