Niepoort Charme is a red that captures the cool-site elegance of Vale de Mendiz’s sheltered, granite-floored vineyards. Its refined tannins and Burgundian poise make it Portugal’s answer to Pinot Noir finesse.

At Vale de Mendiz, Niepoort’s team combines century-old Tinta Roriz and Touriga Franca vines planted on high-altitude schist. Dirk views Charme as his homage to Burgundian terroir, vinifying the only still wine at this historic, lagares-equipped estate. Charme’s allure lies in its unique site expression and winemaking that combine to form an uncommon elegance for the Douro.

Winemaking: Whole bunches are gently foot-crushed in round granite lagares. A brief, intense pre-fermentation maceration kicks off alcoholic fermentation, which then completes in barriques. The wine ages for 15 months in French oak barrels.

Pairing Suggestions: Wild mushroom risotto, roasted partridge or grilled pheasant.

Tasting Note: Silky blackberry and sour cherry entwine with slate and violet, finishing on a whisper of toasted spice.
