Day Five: The Boys at Badoz

Domaine Benoit Badoz | Jura

After the best part of four great days in Burgundy, Bill and Mark took a 90 minute detour on their way home to visit Benoit Badoz at his winery in Poligny.

We at Caviste have been selling his wines for about four months. This is a special producer, with some unique styles and tastes to his wines. They are a wonderful drinking experience and the visit itself was truly captivating.

The boys were able to taste the wines in situ, see the winery, several of his vineyards and two of the cellars where the prized 'Vins Jaunes' are matured.

It’s as real as wine gets.

The vineyards compete for space with the cows and pastures that make the Comté cheese – the perfect match for the wines. The Pinot Noir is an elegant twist on Burgundy to the west, while the Trousseau and Poussard sing their own slightly rustic, but deeply complex, songs. Every serious wine merchant should sell a pure Savagnin (Domaine Badoz 'Cuvée Edouard' is a knock out wine) in addition to the Vin Jaune – while the Chardonnay is a wine that offers easy access from those nervous about jumping straight into the deep end.

We all need to sing a Jura song for 2023. Bring this historic region out of the margins where the wine and food parings are the stuff of dreams.

What a way to end the most wonderful few days of visits, tastings, and good company.
