Introduction to Domaine René Bouvier
Nestled in the prestigious Côte de Nuits, the family-run Domaine René Bouvier spans 30 hectares of prime vineyards, expertly managed by Bernard Bouvier since 1992. Located in Gevrey-Chambertin, the estate has a storied history of winemaking excellence dating back to its founding by Henri Bouvier in 1910.
Vineyards and Wine Production
Domaine René Bouvier produces a diverse range of 26 wines, from the Bourgogne appellation to renowned Grand Crus like Charmes-Chambertin and Echezeaux. The estate's 23 hectares of red wine vineyards and 7 hectares of white wine vineyards are meticulously hand-harvested. Notably, the Marsannay Le Clos, a monopole, stands out for its exceptional white wines.
Historical Evolution
The estate's expansion began under René Bouvier in the 1950s and continued with Bernard's leadership. Key milestones include the acquisition of Marsannay Le Clos in 1998 and additional vineyards in Gevrey-Chambertin in 2001. A new winery, built in 2006, enabled advanced winemaking techniques, enhancing the quality and purity of their wines.
Commitment to Quality and Sustainability
Since 2000, Bernard Bouvier has emphasised quality through manual harvesting, gravity fermentation, and meticulous vineyard management. The estate transitioned to 100% sustainable organic winemaking in 2009, achieving certification by 2013. Respect for biodiversity and soil health remains a cornerstone of their philosophy, ensuring vibrant, naturally balanced wines.
Winemaking Philosophy
Domaine René Bouvier aims to capture the natural essence of the grape, focusing on gentle extraction to preserve balance and vibrancy. The result is wines with delicate tannins, freshness, and complexity. Long ageing in vats highlights the terroir's unique characteristics, producing wines that are both enjoyable in their youth and capable of aging gracefully for decades.
The Essence of Terroir
Inspired by Henri Jayer's philosophy that "wine is not meant to be smelled, but to be drunk," the estate crafts vins de bouche—wines that offer aromatic complexity and the true taste of their origins. As Jacky Rigaux eloquently describes, these wines evoke silk, velvet, and taffeta, embodying the full dimension of their terroir. The subtle minerality and complexity arise from the harmonious interplay of grape varieties, winemaking techniques, and the distinctive climat of each vineyard plot.
