Day Eleven: Brand New Champagnes!
At Caviste we do not choose new Champagnes lightly. It’s almost as serious as buying a new house or car.
The team were meeting new producers in London back in the early autumn when we encountered the Breton family.
They're from the very south of Champagne in the Aube, where the landscape is more Burgundian than classic Champenois. A little more clay in the chalky soil and a few more sunshine hours give wines that are generous and approachable and, most importantly, affordable.
The Breton family are modest growers who have produced grapes for centuries and have only made the Champagne themselves for roughly forty years. Now they are finding their feet and producing wines that cause irritation to the grander names further north.
