2023 Boekenhoutskloof Chocolate Block

£28.00

Big, bold, and unapologetically indulgent, the 2023 Chocolate Block is a wine that commands attention and delivers on every promise. A daring blend that’s as iconic as it is irresistible.

The magic of the Chocolate Block lies in its artistry. Sourcing fruit from Swartland’s ancient vines and Franschhoek’s cooler sites, the winemaking team meticulously balances intensity with finesse. Each grape variety - Syrah, Grenache, Cinsault, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Viognier - is vinified separately to preserve its character. A careful maturation in French oak and concrete tanks rounds out the wine, adding complexity without overshadowing its vibrant fruit core.

Pairing Suggestions: Perfect with spiced lamb kofta, venison stew, smoky aubergine dip, or rich dark chocolate desserts.

Tasting Note: A symphony of flavours, from luscious blackberries and ripe cherries to mocha, black pepper, and a whisper of violet. Silky and sumptuous, with a long, satisfying finish.

Origin: Franschhoek, Western Cape, South Africa

Boekenhoutskloof

Porseleinberg stands as South Africa’s cult Syrah, a single-site marvel on the Swartland’s porcelain-like slopes where kaolin-rich soils whisper of ancient seas. Since Boekenhoutskloof acquired the farm in 2009, winemaker Callie Louw has stewarded 14?hectares of head-trained Syrah, farming organically and coaxing lithe elegance from granitic bedrock with just a whisper of topsoil. The estate’s signature white-on-white labels - each printed by Callie on a century-old letterpress - hint at the meticulous care within.

Callie’s off-beat approach marries whole-bunch fermentation in old foudres and concrete eggs with a submerged?cap technique inspired by Domaine Jamet. The result? Wines that walk the line between Rhône power and Burgundian grace, delivering approachable youthfulness alongside decades of ageing potential. Porseleinberg isn’t merely the Swartland’s standard-bearer, it’s a site-driven statement in every glass.
