2016 Skipskop Sangiovese 'Summer Red', Western Cape, South Africa
Winemaker Jonathan de Thierry is one to break convention and challenge boundaries. Why can’t I plant Sangiovese in these beautiful arid but well-resourced irrigated vineyards? We can confidently say that this is the first Sangiovese from the Klein Karoo to reach the shores of the UK. The wine exhibits classic generous jammy notes of cranberry and redcurrant, very gentle tannins and a delicious lick of cool climate acidity – enabled by the cold mountain air that cascades every night down the slopes of the Swartberg Mountains, giving coolness and balance to this otherwise hot climate. Six months in old French barriques has gently seasoned and softened the wine. The Summer Red brings sunshine into our dark winter evenings.
