2016 Seigneurs d`Aiguilhe Côtes de Castillon
Previously the heart of a fortified farm, the castle originates from the 13th century. Situated on the border between lands occupied by the French and English during the Hundred Years' War, the castle played a crucial strategic role and frequently switched sides according to the political leanings of the lord.
Today, the estate spans 140 hectares, including its wonderful vineyards. The vines grow exclusively on the famed limestone plateau of the area, where they benefit from south-facing sun exposure and excellent natural drainage.
Mark Bedford's Note:
This, for me, was utterly lovely. Soft, layered, and sufficiently complex Bordeaux for £20. From one of the best Châteaux in the Côtes de Castillon, owned by Bordeaux royalty Stephan von Neipperg.
This very approachable second wine has sweet cigar box and ripe autumn berries on the nose with more brambles on the palate and a subtle smokiness that lingers on the smooth, long-lasting finish. This really is a Pomerol at half the price.
Origin: Bordeaux, France
Blend: Merlot, Cabernet Franc
