The Luxurious Depth of Niepoort's Flagship Red

A proper Douro classic, built around Touriga Nacional and a blend of other native varieties. Named after the traditional stone wine presses, or lagares, that have been used across the Douro for centuries, this is a wine that nods firmly to the region’s winemaking heritage.

Expect ripe plum and juicy cherry fruit, backed up by violet, wild herbs and a touch of spice. French oak ageing adds some polish and depth without taking over, giving the wine a lovely rounded texture and plenty of character. Rich, generous and unmistakably Douro.

Dirk Niepoort, part of the fifth generation, leads the family business, following the retirement of his father, Eduard Rudolph Niepoort. Since his studies in Switzerland, Dirk has been passionate about wine and has brought innovation to the traditional Niepoort brand.

Niepoort strives to maintain its status as a "niche player" by crafting unique ports and Douro wines that blend centuries-old customs with modernity. This combination also encompasses wine from two other regions, the Bairrada and Dão, which have contributed to shaping the Douro - Bairrada - Dão triangle. The newest points in this triangle also "deliver the goods" and hold a significant place for Niepoort, as they possess immense potential by combining the rich heritage of Portugal's winemaking history with the potential for innovation.
