2020 Massaya Classic Blanc

Massaya is the essence of modern-day Lebanon.

One of the great monuments to their art is the Temple of Bacchus on the impressive Roman site at Baalbeck. Although their ancestors, the Phoenicians, mastered early age vine farming and winemaking (anchoring Lebanon as a wine cradle), the temple stands as a tribute to the importance of vines in their culture.

A wine packed with fruit and freshness. The native obeïdi variety imparts a hint of easy-going eastern style.

Tasting Note: White flower, lemon, and a touch of nectarine. It combines depth, roundness, crispiness and an oriental twinkle thanks to the local obeïdi.

Origin: Bekaa Valley, Lebanon

Blend: Obeïdi, Rolle, Clairette, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay

Massaya’s history has taken quite a few turns to end up where they are today. In 1990, the estate had been abandoned due to the civil war. Vegetation was scarce as the wells were damaged and the fence non-existent.

The Ghosns family moved back, with a clear vision to re-establish the land with local produce, such a dairy, dry rasins, arak, and molasses.

Massaya, in Lebanese, translates to “twilight” but at the specific moment the sun sets behind Mount Lebanon and the sky of the Bekaa turns dark blue with a hue similar to the blue bottle of arak - a spirit made by the family - that was their first step into alcohol.

Sami and Ramzi expanded beyond arak, with the help of some French domaines, It took several years for the Ghosns and their French partners to detect the right terroirs, grape varieties, and principles behind the business. They settled on a devotion to the environment and a dedication to quality.
