The huge passion of Dirk Niepoort for Baga variety and the fantastic terroir of the Bairrada region led him to look for small parcels of Baga in very old vines, scattered throughout the Cantanhede region. With the acquisition of the Quinta de Baixo in 2012, it became possible to recreate the Lagar de Baixo brand, moving towards a classically-styled wine which highlights the nobility of Baga grown in Bairrada.

Tasting Note: The nose is fresh and inviting: ripe cherries and wild red berries lead the way, woven through with delicate herbaceous and floral notes, and a whisper of spice from careful barrel ageing. On the palate, the wine reveals a refined, silky structure — light-footed yet precise. The finish is long and graceful, with a bright, lingering acidity that keeps you reaching for another glass.

Dirk Niepoort, part of the fifth generation, leads the family business, following the retirement of his father, Eduard Rudolph Niepoort. Since his studies in Switzerland, Dirk has been passionate about wine and has brought innovation to the traditional Niepoort brand.

Niepoort strives to maintain its status as a "niche player" by crafting unique ports and Douro wines that blend centuries-old customs with modernity. This combination also encompasses wine from two other regions, the Bairrada and Dão, which have contributed to shaping the Douro - Bairrada - Dão triangle. The newest points in this triangle also "deliver the goods" and hold a significant place for Niepoort, as they possess immense potential by combining the rich heritage of Portugal's winemaking history with the potential for innovation.
