2022 Domaine de Boischampt Saint-Amour Tete de Bonnet

£28.00

Saint-Amour “Tête de Bonnet” is a plush, structured Gamay that marries Rhône-like depth with Beaujolais charm: rich plum, dark berries and stony undercurrents promise complexity and early drinking pleasure.

Northernmost of Beaujolais’s crus, Saint-Amour’s granite soils yield concentrated Gamay. On the “Tête de Bonnet” plot, 20-year-old vines soak up western sun, their fruit shaped by deep-altered granite and organic conversion since 2019.

Winemaking: Entirely destemmed and sulphur-free, the grapes ferment with native yeasts before eleven months’ élevage in old oak barrels, adding spice and texture without overshadowing Gamay’s bright fruit.

Domaine de Boischampt’s Saint-Amour stands apart for its robust barrel ageing in a cru typically known for finesse, offering a rare marriage of power and purity.

Pairing Suggestions: Rack of lamb, game terrine or aged Comté cheese.

Tasting Note: Enticing aromas of blackberry jam, violets and warm spice; the palate is dense and velvety, with dark fruit, fine oak spice and a persistent, mineral finish.

Origin: Saint-Amour, Beaujolais, France

Domaine de Boischampt

Domaine de Boischampt is the story of an ancient estate reborn through passionate collaboration. Founded in 1642 on the blue-stone slopes of Juliénas, it was revitalised in 2018 by winemaker Antoine Romero alongside Yuko and Bob Harris, who brought Australian-Japanese fervour to this Beaujolais jewel. Their shared ambition, to see Boischampt certified organic and its crus shine with prestige, drives every decision, from biodynamic vineyard preparations to sulphur-free vinification.

Here, Gamay vines cling to steep granite foothills, Chardonnay flourishes on marl-limestone soils, and historic cellars meet modern stainless-steel tanks. Through intuition and meticulous work, the team crafts wines that celebrate terroir’s diversity: Juliénas, Saint-Amour, Fleurie, Chénas, Morgon, and Beaujolais-Villages red and white. These are all born of Roman-era soils and guided by a contemporary organic ethos.
