2022 Sugrue Trouble with Dreams

£53.00
The 2022 growing season was extraordinary. The UK experienced its warmest year on record, with temperatures exceeding 40°C for the first time in meteorological history. Yet, the old, deep-rooted vines – now averaging 17 years across our South Downs vineyards – were able to access sufficient water through the drought, producing fruit of remarkable balance and concentration.

The resulting base wines were forward and complex, with the structure to benefit from some younger French oak barriques in addition to older, larger demi-muids. Thanks to the ripeness of the vintage, they were able to avoid malolactic fermentation entirely and disgorge with a low dosage of just 6g/L.

Winemaking: 40% fermented in 600L and 228L ex-Burgundy barrels of various ages; 60% in stainless steel, without malolactic fermentation. Bottled in July 2023, followed by 32 months on lees. First disgorged in March 2026.

Pairing Suggestions: Serve alongside Norfolk crab blinis or seared scallops with pea purée. For vegetarians, try it with goat’s cheese and asparagus tartlets or a leek and gruyère quiche.

Tasting Note: Pale gold in colour, it opens with delicate brioche, green apple and lemon zest, leading to a chalky mineral palate underpinned by fine mousse and a crisp, lingering finish.

Origin: East and West Sussex, England

Alcohol: 12.0%

Blend: 60% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir

Sugrue South Downs

Dermot Sugrue’s journey from aspiring rock star to England’s most celebrated winemaker began in the unlikeliest of places: a monastic garden at Our Lady of England Priory. With a degree in Environmental Sciences and vintages in Bordeaux under his belt, Dermot planted his first vines there in 2008.

Today, Sugrue South Downs spans four distinct “Grand Cru” sites - Storrington Priory, Mount Harry, Coldharbour and the recently acquired Bee Tree - each contributing unique chalk, clay, and greensand soils. Dermot’s marriage of minimal intervention winemaking and meticulous vineyard care has earned his English Chardonnays and Pinots global acclaim, cementing his reputation as the man who turned Sussex into a world?class wine region.
