2022 Thorle Natural Grauburgunder

£33.00

This Grauburgunder (Pinot Gris) is a mash-fermented, unfiltered, and unsulfured natural wine.

For this purpose, the best and smallest grapes from the 2021 vintage were harvested by hand with a yield of around 45hl/ha. This Pinot Gris comes from their oldest Pinot Gris vineyard. Especially in the dry summer of 2022, the old vines benefited from their deep roots and produced beautiful grapes with an intense aroma.

After selective harvesting of the highly ripe grapes, the aromatic berries were lightly crushed in the cellar and then macerated for 8 days. Shortly before the end of fermentation, the mash was pressed and the must was placed in a traditional oak barrel without clarification.

After about 10 months of full yeast storage, the wine was bottled without filtration and without adding sulphur. Vinified like a Pinot Noir, this Pinot Gris shows a beautiful pink-red color due to its extended skin contact and has a good tannin structure.

Tasting Note: On the nose it is wild due to the spontaneous fermentation, but it also has intense aromas of red fruits and rhubarb, as well as flinty notes, herbal tones of thyme and rosemary, plus a pink lemonade flavour. Another dimension of winemaking!

Thörle Weingut

We could attempt to paraphrase the words of Christoph & Johannes Thörle, but they say it best themselves, as each of their wines and their production involve “the highest quality standards, precision and perfection”.

Their different vineyard sites, across Saulheim (Reinhessen, Germany), are on some of the best limestone bases around. This gives each of the wines a wonderfully mineral character that is further developed and enhanced in the winery.
