2023 Domaine Clayou Coteaux de Layon

£16.95

The 2023 Domaine de Clayou Coteaux de Layon is a luscious late-harvest Chenin Blanc from Anjou, offering the honeyed richness of dessert wine with crisp Loire freshness and remarkable balance.

Following manual picking at optimal ripeness, the Chenin Blanc grapes undergo careful sorting before pressing. Fermentation and ageing take place in underground concrete and fibreglass-lined tanks, where the wine rests on fine lees for six months with periodic bâtonnage to enhance texture and complexity.

This Coteaux de Layon stands out for its seamless interplay of residual sugar and zesty acidity, yielding intense aromas of white orchard fruits, apricot and blossom, and a long, floral-tinged finish. It embodies Clayou’s commitment to sustainable viticulture and expressive Chenin Blanc.

Pairing Suggestions: Blue cheeses such as Roquefort or Gorgonzola; fruit-based desserts like tarte Tatin or peach melba.

Tasting Note: Fragrant white fruits, apricot and blossom on the nose; fresh, balanced sweetness and bright acidity on the palate, finishing long with floral and orchard-fruit echoes.

Origin: Coteaux de Layon, Loire Valley, France

Alcohol: 12.5%

Blend: Chenin Blanc

Caviste

Domaine de Clayou has been in the Chauvin family since its founding in 1920 by Jean-Bernard’s grandfather on just 8 hectares. Today Jean-Bernard and Catherine Chauvin, alongside their son Denis, the fourth generation, oversee 35 hectares in St Lambert-du-Lattay. Certified sustainable by Terra Vitis since 2000, the estate champions employee welfare and minimal chemical intervention across schist and limestone soils.

The vineyards, planted between 20 and 43 years ago, are manually harvested to ensure grape integrity. Winemaking melds tradition and precision: fruit is vinified in underground concrete and fibreglass-lined tanks, white wines rest six months on fine lees in stainless steel with regular bâtonnage, while reds and rosés showcase pure Cabernet Franc and Grolleau expressions.
