2024 Lanzerac Bergpad Pinot Blanc
The 2024 Lanzerac Bergpad Pinot Blanc is a rare single-block expression from Jonkershoek Valley’s decomposed granite soils. Named for the storied mountain path linking Stellenbosch University to Lanzerac, this Pinot Blanc is South Africa’s only bottled varietal in its class.
Bergpad’s uniqueness comes from its south-facing 1993 vines on red-clay sandstone, with low yields. It delivers floral intensity and a silky mouthfeel unlike any other South African white.
Winemaking:
Harvested in February 2024, fruit ferments partly in 400L clay amphorae and partly in seasoned French oak, using wild yeast, then aged 11 months Eleven months’ maturation in clay enhances texture, while subtle oak integration preserves purity.
Pairing Suggestions:
Pair with saffron seafood risotto or grilled halloumi drizzled with honey and toasted almonds. Vegetarian pairing: leek and goat’s-cheese tart.
Tasting Note:
Bergpad Pinot Blanc shows preserved quince, violet and lavender on the nose. The palate offers pear and apricot, with a creamy mid-palate and a long, elegant finish.
