2024 Walter Massa Timorasso Derthona
Walter Massa is widely regarded as the saviour of Timorasso, an ancient white grape native to the hills of Colli Tortonesi in south-eastern Piedmont. By the 1980s, the variety had nearly disappeared as growers replaced it with higher-yielding grapes. Convinced that Timorasso possessed extraordinary character and ageing potential, Massa began replanting and vinifying the grape when few others believed in it. His persistence transformed Timorasso from a near-extinct curiosity into one of Italy’s most celebrated indigenous white wines, often referred to as the “White Barolo” for its structure, complexity, and longevity. Today, Timorasso’s renaissance stands as one of the great revival stories in Italian wine, with Walter Massa at its heart.
Deep straw-gold in color, Walter Massa’s Timorasso opens with aromas of ripe pear, white peach, acacia honey, citrus peel, and crushed stone. The palate is richly textured yet vibrant, driven by bright acidity and a distinctive mineral backbone. Layers of orchard fruit, herbs, and subtle almond notes lead to a long, savory finish. With bottle age, the wine develops complex nuances of honey, beeswax, dried flowers, and spice.
