Sugrue Bonkers V2

£30.00
A blend of fruit from 2022, 2023, and 2024, Bonkers V2 is a purer, more elegant, and salty expression of Chardonnay, but with that same patina of oak and deliciously creamy texture that critics adored about V1.

Bonkers began as an embryo of an idea in the perfect 2022 vintage. Representing their unique take on English still Chardonnay, it employs a range of traditional and experimental winemaking techniques – fermentation in oak, ageing under flor, controlled oxidation, and blending vintages – as well as a drop of Irish humour.

So pure, so à point it almost floats out of the glass. Chalk and citrus aromatics are threaded with richer notes of oak spice and brioche. Creamy in texture, it has a long, tapering, and deliciously salty, Chablis-meets-Sussex finish. Give this plenty of air and time and it will pay dividends.

Winemaking: Whole-bunch pressed. Equal parts French and American oak of various cooperage and size. A small proportion of barrels were allowed to develop flor.

Pairing Suggestions: Serve alongside Norfolk crab blinis or seared scallops with pea purée. For vegetarians, try it with goat’s cheese and asparagus tartlets or a leek and gruyère quiche.

Tasting Note: Bonkers is that friend you have who just gets on with almost everyone. Classic combinations include pan-fried scallops, roast chicken with morels, porcini risotto, and Alpine cheeses such as Comté or Gruyère. If you want to go off piste, try it with miso-glazed black cod or even sushi.

Origin: East and West Sussex, England

Alcohol: 12.0%

Blend: 100% Chardonnay (2022/2023/2024)

Sugrue South Downs

Dermot Sugrue’s journey from aspiring rock star to England’s most celebrated winemaker began in the unlikeliest of places: a monastic garden at Our Lady of England Priory. With a degree in Environmental Sciences and vintages in Bordeaux under his belt, Dermot planted his first vines there in 2008.

Today, Sugrue South Downs spans four distinct “Grand Cru” sites - Storrington Priory, Mount Harry, Coldharbour and the recently acquired Bee Tree - each contributing unique chalk, clay, and greensand soils. Dermot’s marriage of minimal intervention winemaking and meticulous vineyard care has earned his English Chardonnays and Pinots global acclaim, cementing his reputation as the man who turned Sussex into a world?class wine region.
