Mark and Bill had the privilege of visiting some of our Burgundian producers in the bitter January of 2023. Their goal was to gauge the quality of the brand new 2021 vintage. In some cases the wine hadn't even seen its final bottle and they were sampling straight from the barrel. What a task!

The quality of the wine was already clear, and with time to settle in the bottle these wines are already offering so much more than the sum of the parts.

Domaine Olivier Guyot and the Story of 2021

The overarching tale was one of struggle. A disastrously late frost in April left many farmers with just 20-25% of the potential yield; the grapes that survived the chill came out with a gloriously complex and classic style.

Following a climb in overall global average temperature, a lot of the Burgundies arriving in the country had a full and jammy expression, much more akin to the New World alternatives.

However, 2021 was a fantastic reminder of the delicacy of fruit flavour and intricate tannins that make Burgundy the connoisseurs' choice.

To celebrate this potentially overlooked vintage we have this mixed half-case from the charming, indomitable, Olivier Guyot.

Having been born into a grape-growing and wine-making family, Olivier caught the black-sheep itch to drop it all and become... a motorbike racer... no, really!

After one too many crashes and the behest of his aging parents, Olivier decided to ditch the concrete and do what he was born to do and return to the familial vines of Burgundy. Now, several decades later (sorry Olivier!) he has made his name as a fantastic producer with focus on Pinot Noir grown in Gevrey Chambertin and Morey St Denis.
