2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron Pauillac (Magnum)

£135.00

The 2016 vintage showcases the meticulous craftsmanship of Pichon Baron.

The grapes - 52% Cabernet Sauvignon and 48% Merlot - are sourced from gravelly parcels near the Gironde estuary, perfect for developing complex tannins and intense flavours.

Following a rigorous selection, gentle extraction techniques, and a controlled maceration lasting up to 27 days, the wine matures for 18 months in oak barrels (60% new). This careful process preserves its elegance while enhancing its powerful structure, resulting in a wine both approachable now and capable of ageing for decades.

Tasting Note: A bold yet refined creation, the 2016 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron offers a dazzling display of Pauillac power. Deep, almost opaque ruby in colour, it teases the senses with fresh black fruits like blackberry and dark cherry, layered with subtle spices and delicate, toasted oak. On the palate, this wine is a symphony of volume and harmony, with juicy, creamy tannins that promise longevity. A magnificent choice for collectors or anyone craving a true Bordeaux experience.

Goes well with

The depth and richness pair beautifully with hearty fare: think roasted lamb with rosemary, beef Wellington, or slow-cooked venison stew. Its tannic structure also complements hard cheeses like Comté or aged cheddar. Perfect for a cosy evening.

Château Pichon Baron

Château Pichon Baron’s story began in 1694 when Thérèse de Rauzan’s dowry vines formed the foundation of what would become one of Bordeaux’s most iconic estates. Fast forward to 1850, and a division in the family birthed Pichon Baron, with its now-famous château built in 1851, blending Renaissance flair with timeless elegance. This stunning château, with its twin turrets and tranquil water mirror, remains a beacon of Pauillac’s winemaking prestige.

In 1987, AXA Millésimes acquired Pichon Baron, embarking on a journey to restore its former glory. Innovations like the underground barrel cellar, reminiscent of a Jules Verne fantasy, have brought new life to this historic estate. Yet, despite these modern touches, Pichon Baron stays true to its roots, producing wines that honour the past while embracing the future.
