2019 Niepoort LBV

The 2019 Niepoort LBV (Late Bottled Vintage) is a masterclass in Douro winemaking, bridging the gap between the intensity of Vintage Ports and the approachable nature of Ruby Ports. Aged for 4 to 6 years in large wooden vats, this LBV captures the best of its single vintage, offering a smooth yet complex character that can be enjoyed young or aged further for deeper nuances.

In 2019, the Douro faced a dry winter and year, but the cooler summer and perfectly timed rains in August and September worked wonders. The harvest began in early September at Niepoort's Vale de Mendiz estate, resulting in balanced musts with exceptional freshness and acidity, setting the stage for a stellar LBV.

Tasting Note: In the glass, this LBV shines with a deep ruby hue and a touch of violet. The nose is a delightful blend of dark chocolate, wild berries, fresh figs, violets, and a hint of spice. On the palate, it delivers a structured and firm body, balanced by refreshing acidity. The journey starts sweet but finishes almost dry, leaving a long, fresh, and spicy aftertaste. It's a port that offers immediate pleasure but will also reward those patient enough to cellar it.
