2020 Tenuta La Volta Cabutto Barolo

£40.00

Tasting note: An intense garnet red, elegantly transparent. The bouquet is full, complex and enveloping, with a flowery scent of dried roses and violets; fruity, of raspberries and wild strawberries, for the younger wines; of jam, marmalade and nutmeg, that with the passing of time develops hints of black pepper, liquorice, tobacco, leather and smoke. Distinctly tannic when young, with a rich body; its taste is dry, full, robust but velvety, very harmonious and enveloping.

Alcohol: 14.5%

Blend: Nebbiolo

Tenuta La Volta

Cabutto dates back to the 1920s with the purchase of the “Tenuta La Volta” farmhouse where the winery is currently based and around which most of the estate’s 20 hectares lie. Purchased directly from the Marquis of Mirafiori, the nephew of Vittorio Emanuele II, these are some of Barolo’s finest. Another high priest of tradition, Cabutto makes just a single Barolo blended from vineyards in the communes of Barolo, La Morra and Novello. It would be wrong, however, to associate tradition with obstinance: stainless steel, temperature control and automation still sit alongside the basket presses and sorting tables. With predominantly blue marl interlaced with sand, their vineyards naturally lean to the elegant and to the perfumed, a characteristic highlighted with exceptionally long macerations (28-33 days) and a minimum of 36 months in very old Slavonian botte. Elegance doesn’t mean feeble; the delicate aromatics cleverly disguise those textbook tannins that imbue Barolo with its legendary ability to age. These wines can challenge anything in the DOCG with an ethereal perfume dried roses and violets entwined with red fruits, black fruits, exotic spice and liquorice.
