2024 Laberinto Arcilles Riesling, D.O. Colbūn 13%

Laberinto was established by Rafael Tirado back in 1993. The property sits in a very remote area above the shores of Lake Colbūn, high up, on the far eastern edge of the Maule valley. The name translates as maze or labyrinth. Attracted by the unique aspect and the particular geology (Volcanic ashes over Granite subsoils) Raffa was, for some years the only producer in the area. There’s still only one other now, but since the mid 90’s, Colbūn has its own DO within the broader Maule designation. Very quickly Laberinto started to attract some very serious reviews and quite a lot of ‘points’! This is a remarkable estate by any standards you wish to apply, wines of character, huge quality and real interest. Properly expressive wines but ‘fine’ and intriguing, not showy.

The grapes come from a single 0.7 hectare plot, facing south with a east west orientation, planted on soil with strong volcanic participation in a section of steeper slopes. 80% of the grapes are maceration for 6 hours in a pneumatic press and 20% of the fruit is left for 5 days of skin contact. It is then racked in clay amphorae and concrete tanks at cold temperatures. The wine is kept on its lees for 8 months and bottled unfiltered.

Tasting Note: It has an intense fruity and oily character, with hints of quince and rich aromas of celery and honeysuckle. A concentrated and perfectly balanced palate of lime, green apple and wet stones with good depth and rich acidity.
